Our company realizes sustainable agriculture using soil microbial technology. We implemented the agriculture technology by combining our own technology and the method developed by National Agriculture and Food Research Organization (NARO) in Japan. Our service, "Soratan", can improve farm soil environment dramatically and it's also effective in carbon fixation by using local organic waste as fertilizer and biochar, cultivating it in combination with inoculums, and designing a specific microbial environment. The more " Soratan" is used, the more the soil of the farmland improves and carbon is fixed. We are also tackling the project to cultivate crops with sand of the Moon and Mars with the technology.

Food production and supply is a prerequisite for a long duration stay or habitation of human beings in space. Plant factory with artificial light will be adopted as such food production system in space, but there are various issues/subjects to be investigated and solved for its realization. Considering space extreme environment, our research center is aimed at developing new functional plants suitable for space plant factory, technologies for highly efficient plant production in space and resource/material recycling and circulation system in closed ecosystem. Accomplishments of these integrative studies will lead to the establishments of a plant-based food production system in space and novel technologies to be returned to our society on Earth.

Tatsuya Shimizu

He graduated from Faculty of Medicine, the University of Tokyo and got medical doctor (M.D.) in 1992. He made a specialty of cardiovascular medicine and got Ph.D in 1999. Then, He moved to Tokyo Women’s medical University (TWMU) and started the research of cell sheet-based tissue engineering. He developed pulsatile 3D myocardial tissues, vascularized tissues and drug screening tissue models. He has become a professor in 2011 and become the director of Institute of Advanced Biomedical Engineering and Science, TWMU in 2016. Recently he has started to develop a circular cell-based meat production system using micro algae and animal cells, which is grain-free and animal-free food production system.

The contribution to SFS is to develop a circular food production system based on the cultivation of algae and animal cells. Animal cells are cultured and amplified using nutrients obtained from cultured microalgae, and they are tissue-engineered into 3D foods. The technology is also applicable to food production system on the ground as a novel grain-free and animal-free cell-based food production.

Endo Ryosuke

Ryosuke Endo completed his doctoral program (Doctor of Agriculture) in 2005 at the Graduate School of Agricultural and Life Sciences, University of Tokyo, specializing in Biological and Environmental Engineering. He has held positions at Nihon University and Osaka Prefecture University, and is currently a lecturer at the Graduate School of Agriculture, Osaka Metropolitan University. He has also served as an Associate member of the 24th and 25th Science Council of Japan. His expertise lies in Agricultural Environmental Engineering, with research interests in developing resource-circulating food production technologies and space agriculture. In 2022, he received the Academic Award from the Society of Eco-Engineering. He aims to create a resource-circulating cultivation system that can be placed in a household living room.

Ryosuke Endo is engaged in activities related to developing Closed Ecological Life Support Systems (CELSS). In particular, he is involved in researching and developing advanced technologies for processing organic waste generated within closed systems to obtain regenerated resources for food production. He also contributes to advancing food production techniques using these regenerated resources.

Hiroaki Akiyama

Graduated from Kyoto University, Faculty of Agriculture, and joined Nishimatsu Construction Co. Member of planetary exploration projects such as "HAYABUSA" and "KAGUYA". D. program in the Faculty of Science at the University of Tokyo and worked at Akita University after obtaining Doctor of Science. Started university experiments such as the Noshiro Space Event and founded the Space Koshien for high school students. Since around 2010, participated in the reform of Japan's space development promotion system. Currently, worked on the disaster prevention use of the Quasi-Zenith Satellite and cooperation with overseas countries as a government expert committee member.
